The latest UK Insurance Labour Market Trends report by Harrison Holgate and market data analysts Vacancysoft has shown that despite the economic volatility, 2022 was a successful year for UK’s Claims specialists. With over 3,700 new professional claims vacancies in the insurance sector across England and Wales, this represented a year-on-year growth of 51 per cent from 2021.

March 2022 proved to be the peak month of the year, achieving 397 jobs (17.1 per cent), which was also the highest monthly totals across the 2020-22 period. The fastest-growing month-on-month change for Claims in the year was January (36.8 per cent).

Matthew Waters, managing director of Harrison Holgate, commented: “The need to balance capability and resource in such a time-sensitive technical role remains critical. A pipeline of highly knowledgeable, capable, technical claims professionals is vital. There is no immediate sign that hiring volumes in the claims sector will slow. 2023 is set to remain a busy year for hiring in the claims sector”.

A regional breakdown of the vacancies shows that Greater London led the way once more, publishing over 900 new jobs in the capital across the insurance sectors. These numbers translate into a yearly rise of 52.4 per cent from 2021.

However, claims jobs in the North East experienced the largest growth, with a massive 550 per cent year-on-year increase in new jobs in 2022, a sign of the buoyant insurance market. This was followed by East Midlands, which saw volumes up 95.1 per cent compared to 2021.

Segmented by sectors, general insurance topped the table in 2022, closing the year with over 2,800 new jobs, certainly surpassing 2021 and almost hitting three times the volume seen in 2020. This constitutes a remarkable year-on-year growth of 55.2 per cent in relation to a year earlier: While activity was slower than the previous year when it experienced a prominent jump of 92.1 per cent, it was the most significant yearly rise of 2022 among all insurance sectors.

Conversely, non-life insurance, which ranked second in job volumes, having published over 800 new claims vacancies, recorded a rise of 38.5 per cent compared to 2021. This was the slowest growth year-on-year among all sectors analysed. Of note, this sector experienced the fastest year-on-year change across the 2020-22 period in 2021, when volumes went up 220.7 per cent.
